What's on Scott's Mind:
04-11-09: And Now For Something Completely Different...
I just thought about doing someting a little different today. Here's a single panel editorial toon. And if you so desire, check out the slightly naughtier version of this cartoon HERE.

So there.

02-16-09: The Bailouts Are NOT A Good Thing...
Every day we hear about how the economy is going to tank, that we're a heartbeat away from a depression that will make 1929 look like a walk in the park and how if the stimulus package isn't passed this country is doomed. I choose to believe the opposite however, and let me explain why.

When we look at the dire straights that American financial institutions find themselves in, it's easy to work yourself up into a frenzy of fear. Banks are closing and the credit market is drying up, so personal purchase power for high ticket items like homes and cars has been difficult at best and nonexistent at worst. But consider this, is this really a bad thing? What's wrong with having to exercise a little more personal responsibility when it comes to these purchases? If you want a home, now you'll be forced to budget for one that you can actually afford instead of one backed by a risky loan. Perhaps you'll rethink that car purchase and get another year or two out of the one you currently own or purchase a simple, no-frills, inexpensive vehicle with a low price tag.

With regard to employment, I realize that there ar many people losing their jobs, and believe me, I feel for them. But now, Americans are forced to reevaluate their concepts of jobs they find "beneath them." When your back is against the financial wall, instead of passing up on that job you previously felt unworthy, you will take that job to keep food on the table. It may or may not be in your chosen field, but in either case, you'll build on your experience and possibilities exist for new career avenues to open. Any way you look at it, people will be less finicky about how they choose to make a buck and more thankful for the jobs that they have.

Finally, with all the government money propping up businesses, one must consider the unintended consequences of letting government prop up the private sector. With every dollar a corporation accepts, they accept the bureaucratic red tape that comes with it. If you thought efficiency was a problem in banking or manufacturing before the bailout, you'll be amazed at the inefficiency government oversight will bring to the private sector. If you believed American corporations were making bad moves that hurt the public, wait until these same companies are driven by political expediency instead of profit. I guarantee that in ten years, people who support this stimulus bill (Porkukus bill!) will be singing a different tune.

Business, like nature, abhors a vacuum. Whenever a portion of the market is vacated through a company going out of business, there's always another willing to take advantage of their absence to provide their goods and services to the public and jobs to those in that market. Similarly, the same could be said for employment. But when government steps in and props up those who have failed, then the laws of nature are shoved aside and failure is rewarded.

Just a few thoughts from a guy working two jobs (One he hates), driving a car that's 5 years old and who has had to rely on himself instead of government to get anything done in his life!

01-19-09: GOC is Back!
Hey folks, the break is over and as you can see, there's a new cartoon for your enjoyment! Honestly, is there any better way to kick off the return to business as usual than a good-natured bust on our soon-to-be 44th president? Methinks not!

So why the time off? Mostly because I felt the need to try to do some tweaking with the site. There's a few things that you'll notice are different, and some that may not be as obvious. In any case, let's take a look at them one by one so you're up to speed.

First you'll notice that there's a "Share This" button at the top left of the comic. When you click this, you'll be able to submit GOC to numerous social networking sites and blogs and you'll also be able to e-mail a link. Go on, go for it! Make sure your friends, family and even your enemies know about all that is GOC!

Next, take a look in the URL window of your browser. there you'll find a new way to subscribe to GOC's RSS feed. Just click the little orange button next to the URL and you'll be able to set your favorite news aggregator to automatically receive notification of when GOC updates with new material. This new feature was brought to my attention by Matthew Edwards, a relative newcomer to Geeks. I appreciate the tip and thank you for suggesting how this site can be improved!

Underneath the comic, you'll see links to a couple of web comic ranking pages. If you think GOC is worthy, I'd appreciate you clicking either one or both of these buttons. That will enable GOC to move up in the rankings on each web site and give more exposure to the comic. Thanks in advance for all of you who vote for GOC!

As of now, those are the two biggest changes to the site. In the works are some new products to be showcased in the Geeks On Caffeine Shop-O-Rama, banners for anyone interested in setting up a comic web ring and advertising space available for you, or anyone else interested in getting the word out about their product or service to the readers of Geeks on Caffeine.

Thank you very much for your continued readership and for visiting my little corner of the web!
