What's on Scott's Mind: 05-11-08 - "More Musings From a Gun Nut" I suppose I'll continue with my opining on the subject of guns, and why not? It's been a topic of much discussion here in Georgia as of late due to an impending revision of our state's gun laws.
For those not familiar with U.S. conceal carry laws, there are basically 3 categories the 50 states fall under when issuing permits for carrying a concealed firearm. The first type is "May Issue" which means that once a citizen applies for the license, the state may or may not issue the permit to the individual at its discretion. Reasons for declining a permit applicant can include being under 21, use of medication that may alter reason, or any other condition the individual state or jurisdiction may cite. These laws vary from state to state and sometimes from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.
05-04-08 - "Musings From a Gun Nut"
I've been having a ton of fun with this story line...can you tell? The reason why extends beyond a typical leftist's claim that my toons reflect "the mentality a monolithic, right-wing gun nut." (I must confess that I love tweaking that collective of stupids! Their criticizes humour me with their lack of originality and bumper sticker witticisms.) Unlike mentally deficient, gun-grabbers, I believe the 2nd Amendment guarantees the individuals' right to keep and bear arms and that right isn't a component of belonging to a militia.
More than that though, I am an avid shooter who enjoys going to the range to practice with my various fire arms. To do so effectively and consistently requires a ton of practice! Shooting with precision is a heck of a challenge, and each of these weapons requires different disciplines to shoot effectively! So if you'll indulge me, I'll explain why I enjoy shooting each of them and why.
04-27-08: Irony abounds on two levels with today's cartoon offering, and it's just plain weird when TWO news stories have coincidental relevance to one cartoon!
First, in a bizarre twist of fate, or owing to the inevitability of American-made products to malfunction, the Ruger SR9 pistol featured in this cartoon series has been been recalled! Due to a design defect, the pistol will fire on a chambered round when dropped if the safety is not engaged. While this is not what I would call a serious problem for experienced gun owners, novices or those unfamiliar with this particular pistol may experience an "unwanted surprise" if gravity takes over. So if you or someone you know has one of these guns, consult the Ruger web page for instructions how to get this problem remedied.
Secondly, it seems the Chinese are rather PO'ed with CNN for some comments made by Jack Cafferty, host of "The Situation Room." Cafferty, with unquestionable conviction said, "We continue to import their junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food and export jobs to places where you can pay workers a dollar a month to turn out the stuff that we're buying from Wal-Mart. So I think our relationship with China has certainly changed. I think they're basically the same bunch of goons and thugs they've been for the last 50 years."
Chinese people all over the globe are now pitching a fit over Cafferty's comments, though he insists his reference to "goons" and "thugs" was directed to the Chinese government and not the average Chinese person. As far as I'm concerned, Cafferty is right on all counts, but let's be crystal clear on why Cafferty is correct and the Chinese who are bitching about his comments and playing "victim" can shut their chow mein holes.
It's a well known fact that the Chinese government ARE thugs! All we have to do is look to China's STATE CONTROLLED media (No free press there!) for their response to this commentator's "atrocity," how they've ruled Tibet, their hideous record of polluting their environment (Often at the expense of their citizen's health), and lest we forget, a little "party" happened at Tiananmen Square that resulted in the deaths of students protesting for freedom! These are the "thugs" Cafferty was referring to in his diatribe, and NOT your average citizen of that country.
And with regard to Chinese products, they ARE "crap!" Over the last couple of years, China has exported lethal pet food, lead-laden children's toys, defective tires, poisonous toothpaste, defective cribs, pacifiers that could cause a baby to choke and myriad other lousy items. Their products are made at the expense of the consumer, their own environment and without regard for their own citizenry working in their factories.
And Wal-Mart is loaded with that crap...
